Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an engineer or can my plumber handle the water connection?

For a single house in a serviced area, your plumber usually applies directly to Urban Utilities (or your network operator) and that's enough. For subdivisions, infill developments, anything requiring a new or upgraded water main, or anywhere the existing main can't meet demand — the network operator requires engineered design and CWD does that work.

How do you size a water supply connection?

We calculate peak and fire-flow demand for the development, check it against the available pressure and flow in the existing main, and size the connection, meter and any required main extension accordingly. Where the existing network can't supply the demand, we design the upgrade and coordinate it with the operator.

Can you design fire service and backflow prevention?

Yes. We design fire service connections, size them against the available pressure and flow, and specify the backflow prevention required by the network operator and the relevant standards — commonly needed for commercial, industrial and multi-unit developments.
